Taylor Hicks Commits to Playing in the Regions Charity Classic presented by Bruno's Supermarkets

(Birmingham, Ala.) - Reigning “American Idol” champion and Arista recording artist Taylor Hicks will participate in this year’s Regions Charity Classic presented by Bruno’s Supermarkets, Thursday, May 17. This will be his first appearance in the Regions Charity Classic.

“Golf has been one of my lifelong passions and I am thrilled to participate in the Regions Charity Classic Pro-Am in Birmingham which thankfully takes place the week after my current tour ends,” says Hicks.  “I’ve been lucky enough to have played in a few Pro-Am tournaments over the past year and I appreciate the opportunity to meet and play with some of the amazing golfers that take part in these tournaments.”

“We are very excited to have Taylor play in the Charter Telephone Pro-am,” said Executive Director, Gene Hallman. “Taylor has been a wonderful ambassador to the city of Birmingham-Hoover. We appreciate his efforts to bring more awareness to the tournament and to assist us in raising charitable funds.  I think it is great that Taylor is coming back to the tournament as a guest of honor when he attended the very same tournament as a kid. He told me that one of his biggest thrills was getting an autograph from Lee Trevino. Now he could end up playing with a golfer the caliber of Lee Trevino.”

The Regions Charity Classic Foundation will make a $15,000 donation to Taylor’s favorite charities-Studio by the Tracks and Kid One Transport. Each charity will receive $7500. Studio by the Tracks is a non-profit organization that provides free art classes to special needs adults and emotionally conflicted children. Kid One Transport is a non-profit organization that provides transportation to thousands of children across the state who are in need of medical attention but do not have any means of transportation.

Hicks is a native of Birmingham, AL and gained national stardom when he was named the winner of American Idol in May, 2006. He is currently signed as a recording artist to Arista Records and is out on his first headlining tour (with 52 performances) in support of his major label debut, TAYLOR HICKS . His live shows have received rave reviews from critics along the way. The Knoxville Sentinel says, “The 30-year old Alabaman with salt-and-pepper hair and husky voice proved that millions of dialing fingers hit the right numbers when they voted him winner of last year’s ‘American Idol.’ Hicks, backed by a tight six piece band and one singer, used his years of stage experience and the polish he got from “idol” to craft a nearly flawless show.”

The 2007 Regions Charity Classic presented by Bruno’s Supermarkets will be held two weeks later than the 2006 event on May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge. Players anticipated to participate include Hale Irwin, Jay Haas, Nick Price, Loren Roberts, Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw, Hubert Green and Jerry Pate and many other great names. Other celebrities scheduled to appear include Bo Jackson, Charles Barkley, Baseball Hall of Fame member Phil Niekro, actor Lucas Black, Coach Steve Spurrier, Coach Tommy Tuberville, and many more. Since its inception, the tournament foundation has raised $9 million for local charities. Please call (205) 969-9229 for sponsorship, volunteer, charity or general information.
