Birdies for Charity
The Classic is approaching $10 million donated to local charities in its 16-year history. To further increase the amount of charitable funds donated each year, we’re introducing a new program called Birdies for Charity. Birdies for Charity is a fundraising program designed to give participating charities the opportunity to generate contributions for their organization based on the number of “birdies” made by Champions Tour players during the Regions Charity Classic.  The 2008 goal is to raise $250,000, and each participating charity will receive 100% of their collected donations. We would love to surpass this goal! The program launches today, February 18th, but interested charities can continue signing up after today.  So far, more than 60 charities are participating!  Click here to see how your organization can get involved in the Birdies for Charity program.

Volunteering at the Classic
Here’s a tournament fact we bet you didn’t know.  Since 1992, 62 people have supported the Classic by volunteering ALL 16 years! Now it’s your turn to be a part of the volunteer experience and the excitement! There are 30 committees waiting for you and your friends and co-workers. And yes, while knowledge of the game of golf is beneficial to some committees, you don’t have to be a golf expert (or even play the game) to sign up. You’ll be benefiting local charities while enjoying a behind-the-scenes tournament experience you will never forget!  If you have questions or need help choosing a committee, please email our volunteer director, Wanda Gilmore.

The 2008 package includes: a golf shirt, golf cap, meals and drinks during your shift, a volunteer badge providing you access to the tournament all week (even when you’re not on shift!), plus you’ll receive 5 complimentary good-any-one-day tickets, two $5 Bruno’s Supermarkets coupons and a golf voucher for a round of golf at Ross Bridge!  The total value of the volunteer package is $405, but volunteers receive all this for only $65!  Ready to sign up? Read more about the volunteer package and committee descriptions.

Tips from the Champions Tour...

“If you don’t have much time to warm up before you get to the golf course, don’t just hit a couple of wedges and go right to the driver. You’ll swing too hard and your tempo will probably be too quick once you get out on the course. If you only have 10-15 minutes, it’s much better to hit 10-12 wedge shots, a few 7-irons and maybe one driver before going to the tee. I’ve seen the best players in the world start swinging out of tempo from time to time and it’s hard for even them to slow it down on the course.”  - Jeff Sluman

“If you take the club back short of parallel like me, you obviously have to really accelerate it through on the downswing to get any power and distance.  What most golfers do is overswing the club going back which tends to make them de-accelerate at the ball coming through.
Try and keep the right elbow close to the right hip and don’t let it leave your body.
You’ll start to make more solid contact and increase your distance. Remember, on the backswing, if your right elbow moves away from your body and starts pointing upward, you’re headed for trouble.”
  - Dana Quigley
